Welcome to the White Cube September Newsletter. Theaster Gates' first solo exhibition in London will be presented at Bermondsey. Runa Islam is at Hoxton Square and our first exhibition with Magnus Plessen is at Mason's Yard. Cerith Wyn Evans is in Hong Kong while our Inside the White Cube programme continues at Bermondsey with three new artists. For his first solo show in London, Theaster Gates has created a multi-faceted installation that investigates themes of race and history through sculpture, installation, performance and two-dimensional works exhibited both inside and outside of the Bermondsey site. During the course of the exhibition, there will be two performances by 'The Black Monks of Mississippi', a choir that Gates writes for, performs in and directs.

Mitchell Squire Inside the White Cube 2012 crop

Mitchell Squire's practice is founded on an exploration of how artefacts are projections of the body and how material culture can become a lens through which to view society and history. Squire’s work typically consists of a few strategically appropriated components that are loaded with socio-political associations and personal narratives to underline specific historic events.

William E. Jones will exhibit a series of prints depicting idealised allegorical male figures that he found on 19th and 20th century stock certificates. Used to represent the monetary value of the stocks and shares, the original illustrations have been blown up to human scale to increase their significance. Two films questioning the strategies of control implemented by agencies, such as the CIA, will also be on display.

Through film, sculpture, drawing and painting, French artist Isabelle Cornaro re-evaluates objects by exploring the tensions between their aesthetic and cultural value and by questioning meaning through formal and conceptual modes of display. Cornaro uses scanning, photography and plaster casting as her methods of production.

This exhibition by Berlin-based artist Magnus Plessen features twelve recent works. Known for his paintings that oscillate between abstraction and figuration, Plessen's new body of work focuses on rotation and revolution as a means of re-ordering structure and dimensionality within the painting. Using a diverse range of painterly methods and dynamic compositions, his works are studies on perception, structure, material and transience. This is the first solo exhibition of Plessen's work in the UK.

In her recent practice, Runa Islam has explored the syntax, materiality and histories of visual representation, often in relation to the medium of film. Adopting diverse sculptural and cinematic approaches in the presentation of her work, she disrupts, alters and enhances visual and architectural space, shifting perception and drawing attention to the act of seeing.

In the first floor gallery, Cerith Wyn Evans will install four new crystal chandeliers that are clustered together, their lights flickering on and off in reaction to the beat of a piece of music. In the second floor gallery, a neon text spelling out the phrase 'Things are conspicuous in their absence...' is presented alongside an installation of three potted plants that slowly revolve on three turntables.

'Congo River' is a new installation consisting of car tyres placed irregularly in the centre of the exhibition space. Damián Ortega has drawn a delicate line in salt along their surface to dissect the gallery. 'Hollow/Stuffed: market law' is a sculpture based on a submarine model that has been made from industrial food sacks stuffed with salt and suspended from the ceiling.

The 17 figures in 'Still Standing' form the largest group of unique blockworks to be presented at White Cube by Antony Gormley and were included in his highly acclaimed exhibition at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg in 2011. A work from the recent 'Propper' series is also on display in the first floor gallery.

Elad Lassry will present photographs and a performance featuring ten dancers from the American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet. Through the super-saturated colours and bright, even lighting that is also used in his pictures, Lassry flattens the perspectival depth of the stage.

'Everyday' is a musical-visual performance based on a set of brief film clips. Five musicians take the clips as inspiration for their improvisation and in doing so, the focus is placed on both the process of emergence and the resulting music.

For this exhibition, Andreas Gursky has selected 60 works from his oeuvre. Rather than following a chronological order, the exhibition mixes new and old, small and some very large-scale works, thus facilitating new and unusual perspectives on his photographic art.

The photographs of Gregory Crewdson feature often disturbing, surreal events. In the series 'Beneath the Roses', the works are shot using a large crew and are elaborately staged and lighted. This exhibition consists of three series; 'Beneath the Roses' (2003-07), 'Sanctuary' (2010) and 'Fireflies' (1996).
