John and Julie
Directed by William Fairchild
Running time: 82 minutes
John and Julie (1955) is a heart-warming British comedy directed by William Fairchild, featuring Peter Sellers and Sid James in some of their earliest screen roles. It's England in 1953 and two children from Dorset, six year-old Julie (Lesley Dudley) and 12-year old John (Colin Gibson) are determined to get to London to see the Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation procession. Since it's clear that their parents have no intention of going they decide to set off on their own, hitching rides on coaches and 'borrowing bicycles' along the way. A comedy classic, John and Julie is a story of charming misadventure and a host of eccentric characters including Peter Sellers as the police constable on their trail and Sid James as Mr Pritchett, John's incorrigibly grumpy father. Featuring stock footage of the majestic Coronation and set to a haunting theme tune played on the 'Golden Trumpet' by Eddie Calvert.
