On the Up: Series 1
Running time: 210 minutes
One of the best sitcoms to come out of the BBC, On the Up stars Dennis Waterman as Tony Carpenter, a self-made millionaire struggling to come to terms with his new found status. Hailing from South London, Carpenter struck gold with his minicab-turned-chauffeur service and is now living a comfortable life of luxury in Esher, deep in the heart of 'stockbroker Surrey'. However, despite his collection of expensive cars and roster of household staff, he is unhappy and restless. His snooty wife Ruth (Judy Buxton) is never satisfied and his highly opinionated mother, who still lives in her South London terrace house, can't understand why, although being only 14 miles away, he lives “all the way over there”. Carpenter's wayward daughter is educated at boarding school and has become highly embarrassed of her father's views. Written by Bob Larbey, On the Up has all the ingredients for a great British comedy and with its brilliant performance by the late, great Carry On star Joan Sims – who plays the family's sherry loving Cordonbleu cook – it's a forgotten 90s gem.
