Running time: 113 minutes
Following the rise and rise of Staten-island secretary Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith), Working Girl is a classic of 80s cinema; a romantic comedy set on Wall street. Directed by Mike Nichols, the film was a breakthrough for Melanie Griffith and stars Sigourney Weaver, Harrison Ford and Joan Cusack. McGill goes to work as a secretary at an investment bank in a bid to escape her boring job and loser boyfriend (Alec Baldwin). When her boss, the affable but exploitative Katherine Parker (Sigourney Weaver) breaks her leg skiing, Tess who has always dreamed of rising to an executive position, uses her absence and connections to put forward her own idea for a merger deal. Griffith was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her take on the sassy secretary with grand ambitions. A cinderella story of personal, economic and sartorial transformation, Working Girl is a near perfect romance with satirical undertones.
