20 October 2015 – 7 February 2016
The Bibliothèque nationale de France presents ‘l’alchimie du livre’, an exhibition of more than 100 books, made by Anselm Kiefer between 1968 and 2015. These will be exhibited alongside recent paintings and sculpture.
Each one unique, the books are works whose format and presentation has evolved over many years. Created using such diverse materials as clay, ash, sand, hair, plants, straw, photos and lead (a material which has particular significance for the artist), the books vary dramatically in scale, weighing up to 200kg.
In spaces designed by Kiefer, the exhibition recreates the artist’s own workshop and library. Books on display include sand books, burnt books, books made of lead, recent books of erotic watercolours, as well as books addressing the work of writers and ideas of cosmogony and antic myths.
