Anselm Kiefer at Copenhagen Contemporary, Denmark
2 April–6 August 2017
Copenhagen Contemporary presents ‘For Louis-Ferdinand Céline: Voyage au bout de la nuit’, a large-scale solo presentation by Anselm Kiefer. The exhibition features a series of paintings measuring up to 6.6m in height and 11.4m in width, alongside four lead sculptures of aeroplanes.
Kiefer has made aeroplane sculptures since the late 1980s, in keeping with the numerous historical and allegorical references suffusing his works. The paintings on view in this exhibition also draw upon a range of sources, including photographs the artist took during his travels in the Gobi Desert in 1993, as well as Ingeborg Bachmann’s Book of Franza (1955), in which the title character unsuccessfully seeks solace in the barren desert.
