Museum reopening 28 June, 6pm
Johannis-Nacht (St John’s Eve), (1990) Anselm Kiefer’s first permanent public installation, will be opening within the newly renovated Mönchehaus Museum Goslar. In celebration of the museum’s reopening, the installation will be accompanied by a comprehensive exhibition of some fifty paintings, drawings and photographs, chosen to shed light on the work’s themes and references.
Anselm Kiefer created the installation in a former stable and three cellar vaults in the medieval museum complex. The piece is consistent with the motif of bunkers, caves and similar enclosed spaces which reappears across the artist’s oeuvre, and encompasses symbolism drawn from Greek and Jewish traditions as well as German history.
