5 September 2014 – 11 January 2015
Artist talk and Book Launch: 20 December 2014, 4pm
EXPANSION FIELD (2014) is an installation of 60 individual corten steel sculptures, presented for the first time in Zentrum Paul Klee’s exhibition hall. The exhibition, which also includes three early sculpture works by Gormley, was curated by Peter Fischer and marks the first solo exhibition by the artist in a Swiss museum.
Antony Gormley has said of the work:
Over the years, my obsession has been to try to explore the body as a place rather than simply as an object and to reconcile its space with space at large. I want to acknowledge that while we live within a built environment and we are the only animal to construct a habitat using Euclidean principles, the moment we close our eyes and become conscious of the darkness of the body, we are in an unbounded, ever extending space without dimension.
On 20 December 2014, the artist will be in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist - curator, critic, and Co-Director, Exhibitions and Programmes/Director of International Projects at Serpentine Galleries. The event will mark the launch of the exhibition catalogue published by Hatje Cantz, which includes essays by Rebecca Comay, Peter Fischer and Andrew Renton.
