25 October – 2 December 2014
Artist talk: 5 November 2014, 5:30-7pm
Candice Breitz’s video installation work Mother (2005) is featured in the group exhibition ‘SHE: Picturing women at the turn of the 21st century.’
Spanning the period from 1989 to 2013, ‘SHE’ presents a broad selection of artworks, all of which address the representation of women, by artists including Jenny Saville, Cindy Sherman, Lisa Yuskavage, Rebecca Warren and Chris Ofili. Themes explored include women as objects of beauty or desire, feminist discourse and the intersection of gender and race.
Breitz’s six-channel installation focuses on motherhood, placing it in the context of Hollywood culture that forms the subject matter for a number of her works. Clips from movies showing actors portraying mothers at moments of emotional strife are edited together to suggest the pain, anxiety and insecurity with which motherhood is depicted in cinema.
As part of the programme of events accompanying this exhibition, the artist will give a talk on Wednesday 5 November at 5.30pm. Admission is free, tickets are available here.
