The first comprehensive survey of Candice Breitz’s work in South Africa will open this February. Breitz, who was born in Johannesburg but now lives and works in Berlin, is an internationally renowned artist who has exhibited her photographs and video installations worldwide.

The exhibition marks the first showing of the artist’s new single channel video ‘Extra’ (2011) which was specially commissioned by the Standard Bank of South Africa.

The work was created on the set of ‘Generations’, a popular South African soap opera which portrays the country’s emerging black middle class. Since much of the script is delivered in Nguni languages, which white South Africans rarely speak – there are no major white characters in the soap. In ‘Extra’, Breitz inserts herself into a number of actual scenes from the programme, a conspicuously white presence amongst an otherwise black cast. Both thought-provoking and uncomfortably amusing, the work implicitly questions what it might mean to be white in the context of the new South Africa.

This work is shown alongside photographs and earlier video installations by Breitz. Candice Breitz: Extra! Is presented at the Standard Bank Gallery in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and Goodman Gallery.
