Les Rencontres D’Arles presents a series of six new animations by Christian Marclay, alongside his sound and video installation Pub Crawl (2015). While in Pub Crawl the artist coaxed the sound from empty glasses, bottles and cans found abandoned on the streets of East London, Marclay's new works are silent animations comprised of thousands of still photographs. In these works, Marclay has focussed his attention on small detritus littering the streets such as cigarette butts, bottle caps, chewing gum, cotton buds, lids and straws. When played back in rapid succession, Marclay’s documentation of the discarded and unsightly is set in motion, transforming trash into aural and visual poetry.
