The Muse Reina Sofia Madrid presents an exhibition by Damián Ortega situated in the 19th century Palacio de Cristal in Parque Retiro, Madrid.
For ‘El cohete y el absimo’, Ortega has created a site-specific installation relating to the architecture of the Palacio de Cristal. In this work the artist also revisits Augusto H. Álvarez’s Torre Latinoamérica, built between 1949 and 1956 and regarded as one of the most significant examples of modern architecture in Mexico. The building is also the subject of Ortega’s 2007 work De la serie Torre Latino.
At the Palacio de Cristal, Ortega has recreated the Torre as a pendulum suspended from the domed roof. The hollow interior of the sculpture houses a sand tank, like an hourglass, which releases grains of sand on the ground to draw unpredictable forms as the pendulum oscillates.
