5 June – 13 September 2015
IMMA present a solo exhibition by Etel Adnan that brings together visual and written aspects of the artist’s diverse ouvre. Born in 1925 in Beirut, Adnan is a leading voice in contemporary Arab-American literature. She began painting in the 1960s, and the exhibition at IMMA includes a selection of her characteristic small-scale oil paintings, which are created using thick stokes in simple compositions to evoke landscapes.
These works appear alongside a series of delicate leperellos – small printed booklets which unfold into scroll-like concertinas decorated with both poetry and drawings. The exhibition also includes a black and white film, poetry and recordings of the artist reading from some of her most recent published poems and writings.
