Franz Ackermann and Sarah Morris are among six artists selected to create site specific public works at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
The project is a collaboration between the City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places programme. The artworks will be realised as part of the Miami Beach Convention Center’s two year renovation and expansion project, scheduled for completion in 2017.
Franz Ackermann will create a mural titled Mental Maps, drawing on Miami’s identity as an urbanised centre of international tourism. A large-scale tile installation, Sans Souci, by Sarah Morris, will be placed on the exterior walls of the Center’s northeast entranceway. Sans Souci references Morris Lapidus’ first Miami Beach architectural work in 1949.
Commissions were chosen from more than 500 proposals by the Miami Beach Art in Public Places Professional Advisory Committee. Elmgreen & Dragset, Ellen Harvey, Joseph Kosuth and Joep Van Lieshout were also selected for the programme.
