‘The Times’ brings Fred Tomaselli’s edited New York Times front pages to The Orange County Museum of Art. Developed since 2005, the works evolved as Tomaselli brought his habit of doodling on his morning newspaper into play with his studio practice:
‘I’m a news junkie who consumes a variety of sources, while not wholly trusting any of them. What passes for the news doesn’t necessarily reflect what’s going on in the world so much as it spotlights what is noticed […]I always heap a lot of information, personal obsessions, and history into my own work.’¹
In these works the artist utilizes techniques of abstraction, overwriting and collage to rearrange and reinvent historical realities. The newspaper works are also an exploration of print media as a means of shaping and disseminating information, as well as our changing relationship to media consumption.
This touring exhibition was previsouly shown at Universtiy of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).
