6 April - 21 September 2014
Titled ‘Tierstücke - Nicht von dieser Welt’, this exhibition presents Georg Baselitz from a rare perspective, by displaying works that reveal his preoccupation with animal motifs.
Baselitz, who is well known for subverting traditional motifs in his paintings, breaks away from the usual clichés associated with animals and nature. Stereotypes such as ‘Lap Dogs’, ‘Hunting and Guard Dogs’ or ‘Eagles on Coats of Arms’ are rid of any contextual burden and familiar connotations are questioned.
Created along the lines of a retrospective and curated by the Baselitz expert Carla Schulz-Hoffmann, the exhibition includes 70 works that have seldom or never been shown before and reflects the artist’s examination of his own origins and surroundings.
