‘The Nature of Particles’ at Magasin III features Disasters of War (1999), a portfolio of 83 etchings by Jake & Dinos Chapman, one of the many works in which the artists take direct influence from the works of Francisco Goya (1746–1828). First exhibited at White Cube Duke Street in 1999, Disasters of War draws directly on Goya’s renowned Los Desastres de la Guerra (ca. 1810–1823). In their work, the Chapmans respond to Goya’s graphic depiction of the Napoleonic occupation of Spain, sometimes reworking Goya’s original images, or fragments of them, bringing into play contemporary motifs and exploring themes which recur throughout their work.
Thanks to a loan from Sweden’s Nationalmuseum, the exhibition places 20 plates from Goya’s original 1863 edition alongside etchings by the Chapmans from the Magasin III collection.
