15 March–29 March 2016
Julie Mehretu has designed the scenery for the Dutch National Opera's world première of Only the Sound Remains. Directed by Peter Sellars, the concert is a combination of two short operas, inspired by Japanese Noh dramas, by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. The Japanese Nôh theatre was born from the Buddhist idea that light is concealed largely in darkness, so as not to blind mere mortals. There is little action in Only the Sound Remains, heightening the tension, concentration and symbolism.
