Until 2 May 2016
Liu Wei is one of 12 artists featured in ‘BENTU: Chinese artists in a time of turbulence and transformation’, the first exhibition devoted to Contemporary Chinese art in France for over 10 years.
Liberation n° 16 (2014), an oil painting by Liu Wei is featured in the exhibition, as is Untitled (2015), an installation work composed of wood, steel, plastic, glass and mirrored elements. Both of these works reflect the artist’s ongoing interest in architecture and urban environments.
The title of the exhibition, ‘BENTU’, means ‘in native soil’. In this context, the term is not understood to refer to nationalism, but rather a reconciliation of the local with the global. The curators of the exhibition have chosen this title as they feel the concept is central to the work of artists and academics in China today.
The exhibition is co-organised with the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art Beijing (UCCA Beijing).
