WAM present Liza Lou’s astounding installation work ‘Gather (one million)’ (2008-2010), a field composed of millions of glass beads in varying shades of gold, threaded by hand onto cut wire to make one million blades of grass. The artist then systematically counted and divided the blades into equal wheat-like sheaves.
At WAM the installation is presented alongside the artist’s most recent works – wall based colour fields, also rendered in glass. All the works included in the exhibition exemplify the artist’s exploration of pure colour – particularly the subtle differences and imperfections which emerge upon surfaces composed of seemingly identical beads.
