Anselm Kiefer at Kings College, London

Posted:

21 September - 10 December 2017

Nine works by Anselm Kiefer feature in the group exhibition ‘Melancholia. A Sebald Variation’.

W G Sebald (1944-2001) is a celebrated German author whose works are closely associated with themes of memory, loss of memory and melancholy. For Sebald, melancholy is a form of sadness that is ultimately uplifting, as loss can bring with it new possibilities and awareness of life.

The exhibition guides the visitor through a recent history of melancholy, starting from the end of the Second World War through to the present day. Working its way through the ruins of Britain, and from Germany to contemporary Holland, the show aims to provoke reflection on the European condition and nature of melancholy.
