Theaster Gates gives a talk ahead of his ‘Spiritual Transmissions from Gospel to Blues’ performance at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Gates’s talk focuses on music as a source of knowledge with a historical and cultural context. Based on visual culture theorist Irit Rogoff’s research on the sharing of knowledge in the field of art and culture, the talk explores the ways in which educational spaces become accessible environments.

The performance forms part of the first edition of ‘Cosmopolis’, a new exhibition for the exploration of artistic practices based on the gaining and sharing of knowledge. It includes screenings, installations and performances of new works and looks at collaborative practices and artists in Asia, Africa and Latin America particularly.
