Raqib Shaw and Fred Tomaselli at CCA Wattis, San Francisco
Fred Tomaselli and Raqib Shaw participate in ‘Painting Between The Lines’ at CCA Wattis, San Francisco. This exhibition examines the nature of the relationship between literature and art, investigating their varying modes of representation and the transformation of text into image.
Fourteen contemporary artists, based predominantly in Europe and the United States, have been commissioned to create paintings based on descriptions of paintings in a series of novels, with Shaw responding to Dostoevsky’s ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ and Tomaselli to ‘Watt’ by Samuel Beckett. In exploring the state of contemporary painting today, this exhibition indicates the continuing vitality of the medium.
