Robin Rhode and Theaster Gates in 'Beyond Beauty'
'Beyond Beauty' at the Twig Gallery is an exhibition of works by Hank Willis Thomas, Rashid Johnson, Robin Rhode and Theaster Gates. While each artist presents their ideas very differently, it is the search for identity through fighting for civil rights that has become the common denominator among their work.
Robin Rhode addresses the subject poetically, referencing silent movies and street culture, whereas Hank Willis Thomas uses tools of mass communication in order to convey his message more directly. Rashid Johnson's work uses philosophical, historical and cultural reference much like Theaster Gates' confrontation of two diametrically opposed worlds, by committing himself through his art, to restoring inner city areas.
