Sarah Morris's large-scale mural Jardim Bota^nico [Rio] is on view at Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany. Commissioned in 2013, the work was created in response to the museum’s architecture, utilizing the themes of the artist's series 'Rio'. The installation fills an entire room, engaging the viewer through the use of mesmerising visual effects, created using rigorous geometric composition as well as an intense colour palette.
Morris began her career making graphic paintings that adapted the dramatic, emotive language used in newspaper and advertising tag lines. Her city-based paintings are executed in household gloss paint on square canvases, employing rigorous, all-over grids that reference architectural motifs, signs or urban vistas. Their vivid colours derive from each city’s unique vocabulary and palette, but, most importantly, its dynamic.
