Theaster Gates and Julie Mehretu at dOCUMENTA 13
White Cube is pleased to announce that Theaster Gates and Julie Mehretu will be participating in dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel.
Theaster Gates will create a new project titled '12 Ballads for Huguenot House'. He will resuscitate a dilapidated old building in Kassel using recycled building materials to transform it into a communal area where meals are served, performances take place, talks are hosted and architecture students can test out new creative materials.
Julie Mehretu will exhibit four new works provisionally entitled 'Mogamma'. The title takes its name from the main government building in Cairo, given to Egypt by the Soviets in the early 1950s. Fragments of the architecture of this building appear in the paintings, providing them with a rigorous framework over which Mehretu layers more gestural and lyrical brushstrokes and vectors. 'Mogamma', meaning 'collective' in Arabic, is also used to refer to a site that shares a mosque, a synagogue and a church.
