Finland’s IHME Project 2017 is ‘The Black Charismatic’ by Theaster Gates.
Each year, the Pro Arte Foundation Finland invites an internationally recognised visual artist to make an artwork – the IHME Project – to be shown in a public space.
Gates presents one of the cornerstones of his artistic production: the experimental jazz group The Black Monks of Mississippi. The project will take place from April 2017 in four parts: a video installation in a public space, a documentary film about the Monks, their debut album and an album-release concert.
Events during the festival include the world premiere of the documentary (5 April), a live concert from The Black Monks of Mississippi at Rock Church in Helsinki (6 April) and a weekend of talks and films (7 & 8 April). In addition IHME will be releasing The Black Monks of Mississippi’s first three LPs. The film premiere and concert are unique events and can be experienced only once during the Festival.
Also presented is the Black Charismatic Installation, on view from 6–29 April 2017 in the Finnish Salvation Army Temple.
Visit the Festival website here for latest information on the locations and programme.
