Public Opening: 3 October 2015
Theaster Gates and the Rebuild Foundation launch Stony Island Arts Bank, a new cultural hub for the South Side of Chicago. Built in 1923 the building, which formerly housed the Stony Island Trust & Savings Bank, was set for demolition when the City of Chicago agreed to sell it to Gates in 2012.
The building has since been transformed by the Rebuild Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Theaster Gates to create local, community-based cultural initiatives in underinvested neighbourhoods. Renamed The Stony Island Arts Bank, the new centre will serve as a platform for site-specific commissions and exhibitions, a venue for artist and scholar residencies, and a home for Rebuild's archives and collections.
