Georg Baselitz, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George and Anselm Kiefer are among artists invited to participate in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition by this year’s co-ordinator Richard Wilson. Their works are presented alongside other invited artists and Royal Academicians, with additional works selected from thousands of submissions, to create a presentation Wilson has described as ‘unpredictable, stimulating and startling’.
On display for the first time as part of the Summer Exhibition, Gilbert & George present BEARD AWARE (2016); a major new picture from the artist's ongoing group of work that references beards and barbed wire, and explores the ways in which both serve as devices to ‘protect, disguise, intrigue and repel in the past, present and future.’
Royal Academician Tracey Emin exhibits two new polymer gravure prints Grand Hotel I and Grand Hotel II (2016).
Jake & Dinos Chapman present ‘The New Arrival’, a combination of their mechanical sculpture Striptease (2012), which is being 'viewed’ by the figurative Nuclear Family (2014). Etchings from their ‘Human Rainbows’ series are also on view.
Böse Blumen (2012-16) by Honorary Royal Academician Anselm Kiefer is also included. In this work, Kiefer returns to the depiction of rural landscape and to one of his key symbols, flowers blooming through destruction and devastation. Fellow Honorary RA Georg Baselitz presents Oggi Come Domani (2015).
