White Cube is pleased to announce its participation at Art 43 Basel where we will be located at Stand J21. We will present a selection of work by our artists and will screen 'Emergence' by Runa Islam as part of ART UNLIMITED.
Runa Islam's work critically evaluates representational and visual forms. Questioning the role of lens-based technologies in mediating how we see and understand the world, she uses open-ended narratives and immersive architectural installations to analyse notions of authorship, perception and subjectivity. In the 35mm film 'Emergence', the artist extends these investigations to consider the contradictory yet closely linked relationship between film and photography. Filming the process of a glass plate negative being developed in the darkroom, she draws attention to the temporal, film-like qualities of a photograph in its generative moments and to the basic constitutive elements that both still and moving images share.
Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show's multiple sections. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works.
