At EXPO CHICAGO White Cube will present works by artists including Larry Bell, Jeff Wall, Imi Knoebel, Theaster Gates, Georg Baselitz and Virginia Overton.
This year’s IN/SITU programme – EXPO CHICAGO’s programme which provides exhibiting galleries the opportunity to showcase large-scale installations and site-specific works by leading artists, curated by Louis Grachos – will feature solo presentations by Cerith Wyn Evans and Antony Gormley.
Antony Gormley’s Freefall (2007) is a work from Gormley’s 'Exposed Expansion' series, exploring space where the body has been, as opposed to the body itself. The artist utilises negative space in order to create the suggestion of a figure existing within a network of geometrical polygons.
Cerith Wyn Evans’ In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consuminar Igni (2008) is a suspended circular construction with letters made of neon spelling out its title, allowing the viewer to see the letters both frontally and in reverse. The Latin phrase is a palindrome as well as the name of both a text and a film by Guy Debord. Meaning 'We turn in the night and are consumed by fire', drawn from a medieval epigram, the phrase is animated in the work's circular form. Rendered in neon, the words come to resemble an advertising sign – a contemporary commercial spectacle.
This year’s EXPO VIDEO programme, which highlights a selection of dynamic film, video and new media works will include Runa Islam’s Trust (2008).
