This photo etching depicts an informal sketch that Josiah McElheny made to accompany his major work Island Universe (2008), an installation comprising five spectacular, chrome-plated aluminium and hand-formed glass sculptures that ambitiously explore ideas of Modernity and the Big Bang theory. Although purely abstract in appearance, each sculpture is an accurate model of Big Bang theory, where the varying lengths of the rods are based on measurements of time, the clusters of glass discs and spheres accurately represent the clustering of galaxies in the universe and the light bulbs mimic quasars, the brightest objects that exist. Developed in collaboration with cosmologist David Weinberg and taking several years to make, Island Universe is both a formal and conceptual masterpiece that proposes, within a work of art, a new set of possibilities for the universe’s origin.
