'Sergeant Wennigner and Me', a special limited edition print by Sam Taylor-Wood, was released to celebrate her first solo exhibition at a major American museum, opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio, on 25 January 2008, and travelling to the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Texas, 2 August 2008.
'Sergeant Wennigner and Me' shows the artist and Sergeant Jeff Wenniger, police officer and native of Clevleand, Ohio, during Taylor-Wood’s tour of the state of Georgia. Sergeant Wennigner accompanied the artist on her photographic odyssey around the state, and the picture illustrates the strong friendship that developed during their time together. The subjects are depicted brandishing the tools of their trades: the artist, relaxed and comfortable, with a Polaroid in her left had, in contrast to the upright cop with his gun and other devices strapped firmly to his belt. The photograph offers a refreshingly intimate glimpse of a moment between the artist and her guardian, as well as a portrait of one of the more iconic figures in American culture.
