In this interview with Tim Marlow, Darren Almond discusses the evolution of his film installation Sometimes Still (2010), which focuses on the 'marathon monks' from Kyoto who endure one of the harshest and most difficult paths to enlightenment. Almond talks about the making of the work, how it was inspired in part by his travels through Tibet and Japan and about his emotional engagement with the subject matter. Discussing how his first task was to remove his presence as a filmmaker – to allow the image of a single monk running through the woods at night to have its full impact – he links the film to other parts of his practice, in particular, to his 'fullmoon' series of photographs.
