In this film, Susan May, Artistic Director of White Cube, discusses the ideas behind the group exhibition The Gesture and The Sign at White Cube São Paulo. May explains the genesis of this broad ranging exhibition which examines a key strand from the history of recent painting: gestural abstraction. She examines the work of each of the 9 artists in detail – from the epic, 50-part panel painting of Mark Bradford to the 'mistake' paintings of David Ostrowski – all of which point to themes of contingency and chance and the artist's physical interaction with the canvas.
