Museum Palazzo Grimani
Museum Palazzo Grimani, Venice presents a solo exhibition of work by Georg Baselitz from 19 May 2021. Titled 'Archinto', after the enigmatic portrait of Cardinal Filippo Archinto by Titian (1558), the exhibition features 12 new paintings made specifically for the building's Sala del Portego. Set within the classical rooms of the Palazzo, Baselitz's new paintings pay homage to the city and its artistic traditions. Re-affirming his long-term passion for engraving techniques, the paintings have been produced by an imprint technique – whereby the still wet canvas is pressed against a second which, in turn becomes the final work. Often returning to and reworking previous bodies of work, in this series of paintings Baselitz expands his signature visual language to include new historical and formal allusions while adhering to the human figure as his continued point of focus.
