White Cube presents an online exhibition of new works by the British artist Emma Cousin in January 2021.
In Cousin's paintings, life-sized figures interact with each other, poking and pulling at their bodies. Radiantly coloured limbs stretch, contort and join together in endless possibilities. By negotiating the boundaries of realism and cartoon, she explores the limits of the body and the tension between pain and pleasure.
The artist depicts complex and humorous scenes between characters, exploiting the multiple interpretations of a situation. Through dynamic, and at times perverse, compositions she addresses concepts of power, sexuality, interdependence and hierarchy.
Emma Cousin was born in 1986 and is an artist based in London. Recent solo shows include: CCA Goldsmiths, London; Milton Keynes Art Centre; Dolph Projects and Lewisham Arthouse Gallery, London. Recent group exhibitions include: ‘Soft Bodies’ at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester; Jerwood Visual Arts show ‘Survey’ at The Baltic Newcastle, Bluecoats Liverpool and G39 Cardiff; ‘Ridiculous’ at Elephant West and ‘Ultra’ at J.Hammond Projects London.
