White Cube presents its first off-site project in West Palm Beach, home to the Norton Museum of Art, the Bunker Artspace, and many other arts initiatives.
Titled ‘Figure and Form: States of Dissolution’, and located in an 1800 sq. ft. industrial space, the project brings together painting and sculpture by White Cube artists including Theaster Gates, Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Dóra Maurer, Sarah Morris, Magnus Plessen and Takis.
A number of artworks in the presentation are marked by charged figuration, distilling the subject through gridded abstraction, inversion or recollection. A second group of works deal with the experience of inhabiting a body through increasingly fragmented treatments of the figure, enmeshed within their environment. In the final selection, non-objective, illusory space is articulated through a reference to architectonic forms or withdrawn completely, in homages to pre-eminent avant-garde abstract painters.
