Julie Mehretu designs for the Opéra National de Paris

Julie Mehretu has designed the set for ‘Only the Sound Remains’ at the Opéra National de Paris, Palais Garnier.

Directed by Peter Sellars, the performance consists of two short operas inspired by Japanese Nôh theatre. Founded in the 14th century, Noh derives from the Buddhist idea that light is concealed largely in darkness, so as not to blind mere mortals.

Prior to its debut in Paris at the Palais Garnier, the opera was performed in Amsterdam in 2016 and Helsinki in 2017.
