White Cube is pleased to announce ‘Collective Memory’, a group exhibition addressing how, both as individuals and societies, shared memory and accumulated knowledge is created, stored, recalled and interpreted.
The artists selected for our third presentation in West Palm Beach have harnessed the many ways we process collective memory. The trauma of conflict is directly addressed by Anselm Kiefer, Mona Hatoum and Doris Salcedo, while great societal shifts of the 20th century the subject of works by Theaster Gates and Danh Vo. In Fred Tomaselli’s series of transformed newspaper pages and Haim Steinbach’s lyrical assembly of objects, the physical suggests collective histories, and in Miroslaw Balka’s evocative soap sculpture and Ibrahim Mahama’s transformative Jute Paintings, olfactory senses carry the weight of their meaning.
