Theaster Gates’s practice includes sculpture, installation, performance, urban intervention and land development. Through his work as an artist, archivist, and curator, Gates seeks to instigate the creation of cultural communities by acting as catalysts for social engagement that leads to political and spatial change.

Theaster Gates at White Cube Bermondsey

On the occasion of Theaster Gates's exhibition ‘1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise’ at White Cube Bermondsey, the artist discusses his new body of work, in which he re-engages with the archive of journalist Ei Nagata and his partner Haruhi Ishitani, to initiate his own artistic dialogue with its collected narratives.
