In this film, Theaster Gates discusses his presentation for the Artes Mundi 6 art prize at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. Gates talks about how he tries to allow the power embedded in objects to reveal themselves, creating a tension between their materiality and reference to spirituality or otherworldly beliefs. Gates discusses how these works explore ideas of ritual, sacrifice and rites of passage, linking notions of material salvage with spiritual redemption.
