Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris

A site-specific sculpture by Cerith Wyn Evans, commissioned by Saint Laurent, graces the largest flagship store on the illustrious avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Unveiled in December 2023 and suspended within the double-height foyer of the four-storey boutique, Evans’s neon sculpture complements the brutalist and minimalist interior design of the store, which includes seating by designers Donald Judd and Rudolph Schindler and stark black staircases winding between the levels.

Frequently using neon in his practice, Evans remarks that ‘there’s a very mysterious, intractable, strange force at work, energies that are very palpable and physical’ in this material. Conceived as suspended drawings in light, which stretch, arc and extend into space, his neon works are sensitive to space – responding to the visual, aural and spatial dimensions of a given architecture and its organisation of light and sound.
