6 May 2025

White Cube New York

To celebrate the opening of Ilana Savdie’s solo exhibition ‘Glottal Stop’ at White Cube New York, the artist will be joined in conversation by Jasmine Wahi, Director and Founder of Project for Empty Space, and award-winning poet Ariana Reines.

The event will begin with a reading by Reines from her acclaimed poetry collection, The Cow (2006), followed by a conversation between the artist and Wahi.

Coinciding with Frieze New York, ‘Glottal Stop’ marks Ilana’s first immersive architectural intervention, presented alongside a new series of paintings, which draw inspiration from Reines’s The Cow.

Best known for her vibrant, intricately detailed paintings in acrylic, oil and beeswax, Ilana draws upon a diverse array of influences, including the carnivalesque traditions of her native Barranquilla, Colombia, as well as folklore, art history, the biological, horror films, politics and medical illustrations.

Jasmine Wahi is the founder and co-director of Project for Empty Space, a nonprofit organisation in New York City and Newark, New Jersey. Her work primarily focuses on issues of femme empowerment, complicating binary structures within social discourses, and exploring multi-positional cultural identities through the lens of intersectional feminism.

Named a ‘crucial voice of her generation’ by KCRW’s Michael Silverblatt, Ariana Reines is an award-winning poet, Obie-winning playwright, performer and translator. Her recent books include The Rose (2025) and Wave of Blood (UK, 2024). Other works include A Sand Book (2020 Kingsley Tufts Prize), The Cow (2006 Alberta Prize), Coeur De Lion, Mercury, and The Origin of the World. Her 2009 play, Telephone, was the recipient of two Obie Awards. She has created performances for The Guggenheim Museum, Stuart Shave Modern Art, Swiss Institute, Performance Space New York, and many others, and since 2020 has led Invisible College, a hub for the study of poetry and sacred texts.
