Ibrahim Mahama receives inaugural Sam Gilliam Award

Posted:

Ibrahim Mahama has been announced as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Sam Gilliam Award. Established last year by the Dia Art Foundation and the Sam Gilliam Foundation to honour of the late artist’s legacy, the award will be presented annually through the next decade.

As the recipient of the award, Mahama has been granted $75,000 and will feature in a public programme at Dia later this year. The artist was selected by a panel of five jurors, including Annie Gawlak, Gilliam’s widow and president of his foundation; Courtney J. Martin, Director of the Yale Center for British Art; Emiliano Valdés, Chief Curator of the Medellín Museum of Modern Art; Zoé Whitley, Director of Chisenhale Gallery; and Jordan Carter, a curator at Dia.
