‘Mennigebilder and Mennigeskulpturen’, an exhibition of large-scale works by Imi Knoebel, opens on 28 May 2021 at Dia Beacon, New York. Installed in one of the foundation’s large, central galleries, it features the iconic ten-part series Mennigebilder (1976) in which Knoebel explores abstract shapes layered with industrial paint. Part of the Dia’s permanent collection and recently restored, it has been exhibited only once before, in Cologne, Germany in 1981. Alongside other works, reconfigured to the specifics of their surroundings, the exhibition highlights Knoebel’s continued exploration of form, material and surface as well as the methodologies of presentation and installation.
