Julie Mehretu at Walker Art Center

Posted:

16 October 2021 – 7 March 2022

Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis presents Julie Mehretu, a mid-career survey of the artist's work. Featuring more than 75 paintings, drawings and prints from 1996 to the present day, it covers the broad arc of Mehretu's artistic evolution, revealing her early focus on drawing, graphics and mapping to her recent highly gestural, immersive works. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and based in Harlem, New York, Mehretu is known for her large-scale abstract paintings that layer multiple gestures, marks, materials and iconography. Addressing some of the most pressing issues of the contemporary world, as well as the forms and histories of past civilizations, her work explores how the realities of past and present can shape human consciousness. Mehretu has said her visual language suggests how 'history is made: one layer on top of another, erasing itself, consuming itself, inventing something else form the same thing.' The exhibition is co-organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
