San Luis Valley, Colorado, USA

Marguerite Humeau’s long-term installation Orisons, produced with Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum, is on view in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, showcasing one of the largest earthworks produced by a solo female artist to date. Located within a fallow crop circle, this sprawling 160-acre land artwork pays homage to the region’s rich history, existing ecosystem and the potential future it holds. Encompassing the entire plot, Orisons showcases a collection of 84 kinetic sculptures that capture the interconnectedness of the land’s narratives. Inspired by native and invasive vegetation, these plant-like structures come alive with the force of the wind, summoning the energy of the valley.

For Orisons, Humeau collaborated closely with local farmers and an arsenal of experts in conservation, wildlife refuge, ornithology and indigenous communities, conducting extensive research into the valley’s inhabitants, history and future with an aim to celebrate and reconnect the land to its diverse ecosystem.
