Michael Armitage at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen

Posted:

10 June – 18 October 2021

Account of an Illiterate Man, an exhibition of works by Michael Armitage at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen opens on 10 June 2021. The first solo exhibition of Armitage's work in Scandinavia, it features a selection of his key works to date within an installation of art and archaeological artefacts from the Glyptotek's collection. Working between Nairobi and London, Armitage works on Lubugo, a traditional Ugandan bark cloth, as a ground for his complex and associative paintings which draw on narratives from the culture of his native Kenya. The exhibition takes the form of a series of site-specific dialogues with masterpieces from the Glyptotek's French collection – including paintings by Manet, Morisot and Cézanne – ancient Egyptian works and granite, bronze and marble sculptures. Offering a space for reflection, the exhibition brings together classical themes with Armitage's contemporary narratives and iconography.
