Michael Armitage at South London Gallery

Posted:

13 December 2017 – 23 February 2018

Michael Armitage presents ‘The Chapel’, at South London Gallery, his first solo show in a London public gallery.

With the Gallery’s chapel-like main space in mind, Armitage has created seven large-scale paintings. The works explore the ambiguous boundaries between religion, folklore and social consensus, particularly in relation to issues of mental health in East Africa. References are drawn from historical and contemporary news stories, internet gossip, and the artist’s own experiences of Kenya, blending his own dream-like figuration with compositional references to masters of Western art history.

An exhibition catalogue has been produced for the exhibition and is available from 13 December 2017.
